Resins and Fillers

Our comprehensive range includes low viscosity systems for room temperature laminating, RTM and resin infusion, as well as systems required to operate in high temperatures (up to 220°C), specialist gelcoat formulations and adhesives.

Our resins systems are used mostly in performance driven applications for the production of components that require high static and fatigue strength properties, and high stiffness. Our customers include companies producing sports equipment, aircraft components and the racing car constructors. Large quantities of our resin systems are also supplied into the wind energy and marine industries.

The precursors used in the formulation of our resin systems are, where possible, carefully selected to reduce odour levels and provide very good physiological properties thereby minimising skin irritation and skin allergy problems.

For optimum processing flexibility most of our systems come with a range of hardeners, which vary in reactivity.

The PRF Range of Fillers

The PRF range of filler additives are designed to be added to solvent-free liquid resin systems such as the RS-L135 & RS-L285 systems. They may also be added to polyester type resin systems although some of the applications are best suited to epoxy systems. The addition of fillers to a resin mix will vary the characteristics of the resin system: slightly altering its thixotropy to create a thick semi-liquid paste. However, the over addition of filler powders can severely alter the structural integrity by increasing the modulus and reducing the elongation at break. Resin starvation by over addition also leads to poor adhesion and bond failure.

RS-F001 Microfibres: Used as a structural low volumising additive to create a glue slurry or filleting paste from a liquid resin mix. It is typically used in conjunction with RS-F002 whereby the fibres act in 3 dimensional anisotropy.

RS-F002 Fumed Colloidal Silica: A low volumising structural additive used to increase the thixotropy of a liquid resin mix or improve the handling characteristics of a filled resin mix particularly on vertical surfaces. Small additions of silica may typically improve abrasion resistance of a resin system but over addition may reduce elongation and increase its modulus.

RS-F003 Low Density Fill and Fair Mix: A high volumising non-structural pre-blend of phenolic micro-spheres, glass micro-spheres and silica. When combined with a liquid resin mix it forms an ideal profiling putty with excellent wet handling characteristics and a tough cured surface that is easy to sand and feather-edges well.

RS-F004 Glass Micro Spheres: A low-density volumising additive that increases the viscosity of a resin mix (makes more creamy). When used with Silica it can act as either a low strength glue or syntactic foam in areas to be secondary bonded or as a fill and fair scheme where improved abrasion resistance may be needed. However it would typically be harder to rub back to fairness after cure.
